Properties

Heat Resistance - TBA’s KC range of fabrics uses a glass cored yarn with an aramid sheath for temperatures of up to 450°C. TBA’s OKC fabrics use a blend of high performance fibres that produce a fabric with excellent heat resistance and metal shedding properties.

Wear Resistance - Many of TBA’s fabrics contain para-aramid to increase their wear-resistance properties. For additional resilience, a wire core can be inserted into the yarn for cut-resistant gloves and garments.

Aluminised Fabrics for Protective Clothing

TBA’s aluminised fabrics are widely used to fabricate items of protective clothing such as gloves, mitts, aprons, jackets, trousers and fire proximity suits. These are used within industry to protect workers from heat and welding splash. A variety of base fabrics can be offered depending on the application involved. The ‘08’ range are manufactured by adhering aluminised polyester film to the woven or nonwoven fabric. An extra elastomeric layer can be incorporated between the film and the fabric to impart a degree of water resistance for use in extremely warm and humid conditions. This layer also aids in stitch holding when making intricate garments such as gloves and helps in the shedding of molten metal splash.

All batches of aluminised fabric for protective clothing undergo a wet-flex test, prior to release to assure the adhesion between the fabric and film.

Unlike some competitor’s products, TBA uses polyester film that is aluminised on both sides, so that some degree of radiant heat protection is still offered when some of the outer layer of aluminium is worn away, thus extending the life of the garment.

ISO15538:2001 – Protective Clothing for Fire-fighters (with a reflective outer surface)

A clothing assembly of an OKCA507 outer surface and an inner insulating layer of INT420-1 has been tested and approved to ISO15538:2001.

See product technical data sheet and test reports for details.

Fabric Care

Wipe clean only – do not launder. Try to keep the fabric as dry as possible, but if it does become wet due to perspiration, hang the garment to dry thoroughly between uses.

High Temperature Sewing Threads

TBA can offer a range of high temperature sewing yarns for the fabricator ranging from para-aramid (including Kevlar), PTFE lubricated fibreglass or stainless steel.

They combine high strength and temperature resistance to be used in conjunction with TBA’s Thermal protection products. PTFE treatment imparts extra chemical resistance.

Yarns

TBA’s High Performance Textiles yarns are manufactured on Dref spinning equipment to combine the properties of the strength of the core and the insulating properties of the sheath component. These yarns are also used for the in-house weaving of TBA’s High Performance Textiles fabrics.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial Seals & Packings

  • Knitting & Weaving of Heat & Cut Protective Clothing

  • Gas Mantle Ties

  • Braiding

Manufacturing Capability

The Company uses Dref 2, Dref 2000 and Dref 3 spinning machines to manufacture yarns ranging in count from 60 tex (16 Nm) to 1000 tex (1 Nm). Yarn can be plied (up to 6 ply) and wound onto packages suitable for the customer’s end-use (max. 3kg weight). It is possible to insert 2 cores into the Dref spun yarns, enabling the incorporation of metallic wires if desired. Yarns are usually made-to-order to customer-specific requirements.

Glass fibre yarns (including textured) are also available from our Thermal Protection business – see web page.

Yarn Treatments

TBA’s in-house yarn treatment plant can be used to apply chemical finishes to enhance the yarn properties as required.

Fibre Range

Para-aramid (inc. Kevlar®), meta-aramid, preoxidised acrylic, polyacrylate, polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), FR viscose and others on request. The fibres can be used 100% in the sheath or blended to combine specific properties.

Natural Fibre Yarns
transport seating and fire barriers
Transport/Public Seating Fire Barriers

TBA’s Seating Fire Barriers are widely used in upholstered seating, especially in the rail industry, but also in aircraft seating, bus and coach seating, public building seating and mattresses. They are incombustible and produce low amounts of smoke and toxic fumes. They provide a barrier between the outer dress fabric and the foam, to prevent flame reaching the foam in the event of a fire. This gives passengers time to escape the vehicle (or other enclosed area) before the build up of toxic, dense smoke, which would impede their escape. The inclusion of knitted wire mesh in these products is designed to prevent the breach of the barrier, which would expose the foam to flame.

Our barriers are tested in manufacturer’s seats to the strictest European and International standards, to ensure that the combination of the seat design, the choice of foam, barrier and outer dress fabric perform as required by the application.

Types of products available

  • INU products - An engineered blend of high performance, inherently flame-resistant fibres in needlefelt form, in varying weights, to provide the required characteristics

  • INT products - Needlefelt as above, but with FR calico attached, for increased wear- resistance.

  • INF products - Needelfelt, quilted with knitted wire mesh to provide some vandal resistance.

  • INFT products - Needlefelts, with both FR calico and knitted wire mesh attached.

  • FBGS240 - A polymer coated woven fibreglass product, which produces very little smoke and toxic fumes in the event of a fire. Tested to DIN 5510:2009 FED(30) for 13 gases plus determination of presence of 5 additional gases according to the more stringent Bombardier 0248-PLA-0010.
